Alabama 200: Fact, Fiction, and Folklore in the Alabama Blackbelt
On July 12, 2018 a major exhibition of my artwork will open at the Johnson Center for the Arts in Troy, Alabama. The opening event will begin at 7:00 PM and I’m so happy that Nancy Mims Hartsfield will be showing her wonderful encaustics in the lower gallery.
Some of my newer pieces use wax, too. I’m using cold wax medium, however, and that is different from encaustic where the wax and pigment are heated. Nancy and I will be teaching a two day Artbridges workshop in Troy on July 12 and 13 in conjunction with Alabama Arts Alliance for teachers who are connecting VISUAL AND MEDIA ARTS WITH NATURAL and PHYSICAL SCIENCE, MATH, SOCIAL STUDIES, and CHARACTER EDUCATION. It’s going to be a lot of fun.
My own exhibition is a collection of paintings and assemblages that are connected with the art of storytelling. There is a narrative to each piece and I’m curious to see how people react to each one in seeking the “back story”. ALABAMA 200: FACT, FICTION, AND FOLKLORE is a way for me to kick off my own celebration of the state of Alabama turning 200 years old on December 14, 2019 when it was admitted to the union as the 22nd state.
It is my sincere hope that everyone reading this will come to the opening on July 12, 2018 at 7:00 pm! I look forward to seeing old friends and acquaintances and making new friends and acquaintances, too.
